Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Many ask how can one fear God if He portrays Himself as a God of love. It might seem contradictory and confusing but one has to understand that there is fear and fear.
Dictatorial fear is that kind of fear which is triggered out of oppression and terror. People submit to this type of fear because they are afraid that they will be harmed if they do not do so.
The fear the Bible is speaking about is a deep understanding of who God is, yes a God of love but also a righteous judge. Knowing that God is in control of every element and therefore, the more we get to know HIM through His Word and personal intimate time with HIM, the more we appreciate HIS greatness and the more we respect (fear) HIM.
This kind of fear is true wisdom, as what profit would you get if you get all the power and possessions the world has to offer and loose eternity?
