“Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.”
(Luke 10:4)
Security & Urgency are the two themes in this verse.
Security: Jesus is clearly telling the disciples not to rely on anything else but the power they have been endowed with. Security and empowerment lies in Christ alone. In HIm they had all they ever needed. Same applies to us. In other words, you are ready to go once Christ is in your life to proclaim the good news about HIM. The Holy Spirit is all you need to share the gospel.
Urgency: The same Christ who stopped at the touch of his tunic, urged the disciples not to greet anyone on the road. Contrasting? Not really, Christ’s urgency is the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. That was His main focus. That touch of a tunic served to heal a person after 12 years of sickness and was used as a testimony of His amazing power and love. Through that many witnessed and eventually believed. On the other hand, the disciples had a specific task, that is to pave the way for Jesus to visit that town and they had to go at once to proclaim that good news was about to visit them. Christ Jesus the light of the World.
In Christ we have all we need. He is our security and we are empowered through the Holy Spirit to perform the great commission that is to go and make disciples of all nations……(Matthew 28:19-20)
