“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)
Difference between a follower and a disciple.
Just believing in Jesus does not make you a disciple, you are just a follower. There is a cost attached to allow Jesus becoming you life mentor. No materialistic payment with which you can pay, but the cost of being a disciple of Christ is self-denial. Loving HIM (in action) more than you life itself. This means that you are ready to give it all up to be in relationship with the Saviour.
You will only do so once you grasp the crude reality of needing a Saviour.
Knowing the reward to be able to evaluate the cost.
Most of the time we hear preachers declaring ‘Repent from your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord & Saviour.’ It is the best advise he/she can give you but many ask, what is sin? I do not hate anybody, I just live and let live. There are other far worse than I am. While these might be genuine questions and reflections, most of the time they act as smoke screen to help us find a temporary hide away from dealing with the serious issue.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death.” Rightly so, we describe the physical death as some thing tragic, a tough loss. Many do not know that there is a second death which is a million times more tragic than the 1st death, that is being cast away in the lake of fire and brimstone, for eternity. It is not actually a death but an eternal torment. Being saved from this alone is reason to worship God and thank HIM for Jesus who took the punishment on our behalf.
Repentance is more than just saying you’re sorry, it implies a change of lifestyle.
God is omniscient and is not impressed by words or rituals, He looks straight into the heart. He is well able to change our traits, strengthen us where we are weak and transform us into the likeness of His delight, His Son Jesus, but His power can only be unleashed over those who approach HIM with a repentant heart.
What you loose in this world is nothing compare to the future glory.
This is life is vapour when compared to eternity. is it worthwhile losing the forest for a tree? Jesus is offering you a way, where there way no way, He is the only way to heaven, You can never repay HIM back for what He has done on the cross, so the minimum we can do is to live a life full of gratitude. We can do this by doing what pleases Him most. Jesus stated ‘ If you love me, you obey me’ (John 14:23).
Being a disciple of Christ means living a life with no reserve, totally committed to the Creator of life itself.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for this word. Thank you Lord for giving us a way out of eternal torment in hell, just thinking about it brings shivers to my spine. My God, I can never re-pay you back but one thing I can do, to live a life which pleases you and surrender to your glorious will so that you can use me for your glory. May others see my example and be drawn to you. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.
