“I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
The christian earthly life is not a 100 meter race but a life long marathon which ends at the throne of Judgement. As from the ‘honeymoon’ period of our relationship with Christ, we will start encountering what we call the constant battle between the flesh and the spirit as Galatians 5:17 states “For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.”
This scripture becomes vivid in the life of every Christian who decided to walk in the way of the Lord. A battle which can never be won by our own means or abilities. No matter how many years you have been in the Lord, seniority in the Lord’s kingdom counts nothing unless it is endorsed by a life surrendered to HIS glorious will.
Jesus gave us the victory on the cross over sin. When we accepted Him as Lord and Saviour we also participated in His death and resurrection. That is what dying to self means. The old me has gone and the new has come (2 Cor 5:17).
The new me has been released from sin, it is no longer his master, now Jesus is his master and therefore, sin can no longer claim us. So we cannot yield to it any longer. These might seem words of circumstance but they should only serve as an eye opener to help us lead a holy life which is the only one acceptable to God (Hebrews 12:14).
So how can we constantly overcome sin?
In the the bible there are two promises made by the Lord to which we should constantly abide to…
1. Today’s key scripture: “I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (PSALM 119:11)
2. Psalm 119:9 “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.”
Both scriptures emphasise two key aspects; meditate on and live the Word of God, allowing it to be our life foundation, we will be more than over comers through Christ. So the Key is to mediate on the Word of God day and night (Joshua 1:8). Not just know the word but live the Word. This will enable the Holy Spirit to shine through you and where there is light, darkness cannot stand (John 1:5).
So if you are today struggling with sin, it is time to take your antidote which the Lord gave us through His word. It is not a temporary prescription but a life long medication which will give you the spiritual antibodies to fight the sinful cravings.
