And he (Jesus) said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-39)

I have been lately meditating a lot about these three verses. I am finding in them the very essence of Christian living as Jesus said in the 3rd verse on these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets, basically it encapsulates all we should do to live a life worthy of the Lord’s glorious Name.

Beginning with what Jesus describes as ‘the great and first commandment’ to “Love your God will all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” In other words making God the foundation of your life, your very existence, depending totally on Him. This means that your thoughts, actions, words, deeds are formed in HIM and for HIM. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end and so should He be for each and everyone of us who accepted His special gift – Jesus.

Loving is obeying (John 14:15). Therefore there is no true love towards God if we do not love and live by His Word.

Then Jesus goes on saying, the 2nd commandment is just like it. That means loving God is loving others and treat them as yourself. We cannot say we love God and mistreat others and there is no true love towards others if that love is not engrafted in God.

What if we start living by these two commandments and base all our thoughts, decisions, speech and actions on them? Asking ourselves before we do something, would this action glorify God? and would it build up and encourage the person who will be influenced by this action?

This requires a lot of grace and empowerment of the Holy Spirit, who is more than willing to impart it to you. Therefore, the ball is in our court, are we willing to allow the Holy Spirit move in our lives?

Heavenly Father, as you have shown throughout your Word, love is action and You were the catalyst of such unconditional love as you loved us first, allowing your Son to die for us while we were still your enemies. Our response to that amazing love is to allow it to consume any longings which do not belong to you and allow your love to fill our hearts and make it over flow unto others. Help us keep these two commandments constantly into perspective and let them shape the way we think, act and speak. All this can only be achieved by your amazing grace and through the power of the Holy Spirit. We thank you for moving into our lives, all this we pray in Jesus Name…..Amen.
