Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister. (1 John 3:7-10)

Righteousness – is the greek word Dikaios

From which the word dikaiosýnē comes from and it simply means God’s approval.

I met with a lot of people (I was one of them before I accepted Jesus) who tell me. I have my own special way to follow God and since I am not harming anyone and living at peace with my neighbour, than I am a good person.

These are all good things and certainly they will make you an ideal candidate for the Citizen of the year. However John is here talking about the way of life which is approved by God only that kind of life is counted as righteous.

We are living in a day and age in which the world is supporting sin by legalising it and therefore in the society’s mindset, it will be established as something acceptable, legalising sin does not make it acceptable to God. What God called sin yesterday, is sin today and for the rest of our existence.

That is why the Bible has a key role in our lives, as it is God’s instruction book for us to live a righteous life. Immersing ourselves in its teaching and by letting the Holy Spirit mould our thoughts, will allow us to become more Christ like.

The result would be living a purposeful life full of inner peace and joy, which is not move by feelings, situations or any other external influence.

So let us pursue righteousness and may the peace and joy of the Holy Spirit dwell in us as we become a beacon of light into this world of darkness.
